2020 Vision

A 15 Year Ministry Plan

For Stony Point Baptist Church

Introduction

Every Church comes to a place in its ministry  where certain decisions are required to be made by its members.   These decisions are required due to the ever-changing world around us.  Today, we live in a country that is much more diverse than it was just 10-20 years ago.  Stony Point and its surrounding area is no longer the small, family-related, rural community it once was.  Our children are not growing up and staying.  Our children are going away to college, then on to careers and lives that are not necessarily here in this area.  Farmers are fewer and the land that was once planted with produce and covered with livestock is now being sold to developers who continue to build house after house.  The people moving to the Stony Point area, from other states as well as other countries, are purchasing those houses and moving in, bringing their different lifestyles with them.

This means new cultures and different beliefs, none of which we are accustomed, are here to stay.  The need for Stony Point Baptist Church to be aware of this and respond to the ever increasing need for the Gospel to be heard and its ministries to be revamped and/or created is imperative for its own existence.  A renewed vision for the direction of Stony Point Baptist Church must be determined in order to move its ministries forward with the body of Christ (our members) working together in unity.

The following pages consist of what we, the leadership of Stony Point Baptist Church, believe to be a very manageable long-range plan (15 years) that, with God's assistance and direction, will prove to be a very rewarding experience in ministry.   We realize that some issues will require very little work and some will seem monumental.  However, there is absolutely nothing within the content of this plan which Stony Point Baptist Church cannot accomplish.  God Himself is on our side and everything recommended in this long-range plan has been carefully thought out, well-planned, and bathed in prayer.

As you read each part of the long-range plan, please pray that God will give you a peace about the overall plan.  When the members of Stony Point Baptist Church vote on this plan, they will be asked to vote on it as a whole with no parts being removed.  Please understand you are voting to move forward with the plan as a whole, however, anything with an asterisk (*) beside it will require the Church's approval in a called Church Conference at the appropriate time before implementation.  Also, each year the Long-Range Planning Committee, along with all other areas of the Church's leadership, will re-evaluate the plan to see how well it is doing and determine whether or not any part of the plan needs to be revised.

Please take your time to think about each area of the 2020 plan.  Pray over the content, especially the areas in which you may have difficulty.  And as you pray, be reminded that we are looking for God's will to be done, not our own.

                        In His Service,

                       Pastor Greg Barefoot

Stony Point Baptist Church has five primary areas of ministry: Praise and Worship, Discipleship, Evangelism, Missions, and Stewardship.  These five areas are the main focus of the vision process.  No particular area of ministry should be overemphasized since it takes all five to keep the Church alive and functioning properly.  Two other areas will be listed as a part of the 2020 vision that are not necessarily areas of ministry, but important for the function of ministry.  The first area is Administration and the second is Building Projects.  Administration will recognize organization goals, mainly concerning personnel and office issues.  The Long-Range Planning Committee has a dated proposal for congregational approval under the heading of Building Projects concerning the relocation to the new property on Old Mountain Road.  Please read the plan carefully.

Under each area of ministry, there will be a list of goals.  Some of these goals are intended to be met annually, while others will have the specific year by them, suggesting when they should be implemented.

Make sure you read over each area carefully.  Any questions may be directed towards the staff, who may recommend the appropriate person to assist you.

Challenges and Opportunities

Over the past decade, the Southern Baptist Convention has continuously performed studies in order to identify certain challenges and opportunities that Churches may face in the future.  In the 2020 Vision Plan, we have made an attempt to deal with some of these challenges and opportunities that we believe will play out as major components in the future ministry of SPBC.

1.                  Family Life - SPBC should be committed to promoting strong family values in order to face the growing problem of deteriorating marriages and changing families.

2.                  Mission Involvement - There has been a rising interest in missions and presenting the Gospel over the past few years, mainly due to recent natural disasters.  It is imperative for SPBC to become more mission-minded.  This can be achieved by properly educating the Church body about missions, sending out mission groups both locally and nationally, and continued participation of missions giving through the Cooperative Program.

3.                  Leadership Development - SPBC's 2020 Vision Plan includes opportunities for preparing and involving lay people in discipleship and leadership.  In order for the Church to remain strong in her commitment to Kingdom growth, the members must be multiplied, taught and trained through a Biblical perspective.

4.                  Bible-Learning - This is an essential focal area if there is going to be any advancement in reaching the world for Christ.  People need an understanding of what the Scriptures teach in order to live Christ-centered lives.  According to studies in the history of religion, widespread interest and participation in Bible Study have always preceded every major advance in Christianity.

5.                  Church Fellowship - Through the 2020 Vision Plan, SPBC will continue to be a caring fellowship that recognizes and develops the need for relationships between people drawn together to one another in Christ.  This is a vital base from which evangelism and Christian discipline must spring.

6.                  Aggressive Evangelism - It is not only a privilege, but an obligation on the part of the body of SPBC to witness to the unreached masses of people in our community, our nation and our world.

7.                  Efficient Communication - Using modern technological means to communicate the Gospel will also be a vital part of the 2020 Vision Plan.  As the communications revolution sweeps the world, SPBC must use all media capabilities to make the Word of God known throughout the globe.

8.                  Human Suffering - Through the 2020 Vision Plan, SPBC will continue to motivate her members to help meet the worldwide problems of human hunger and human rights.

9.                  Personal Adjustment - In the world we live in today, people's roles in life are continuously changing as they pursue personal fulfillment in life.  It is important that the ministries of SPBC help people to adjust to a lifestyle where they find contentment through Jesus Christ, leading them on a journey of less change of pace and the experience of a peace that surpasses all understanding.

10.             Community Life - The 2020 Vision Plan of SPBC also includes ministering to the spiritual and moral needs of the community.  The Stony Point area is home to a high rate of high school drop-outs, single parent homes, homes suffering from substance abuse and physical abuse, and homes being destroyed by sexual immorality.  By teaching strong biblical truths, SPBC can have a major impact on the entire value system in the Stony Point community.

11.             Christian Morality - SPBC needs to heavily influence the Stony Point community with Christian moral values.  People are more than animals and need to behave on a higher plane than animals.  A part of SPBC's mission should be to identify and clarify moral values and use appropriate means to influence society to make Bible-based decisions, even when it is not popular.

12.             Positive Leadership - Our world continues to crash into the waves of social, economic and potential crises that threaten the stability of society.  SPBC must encourage all Christians and others to give calm and resolute leadership when the world around them seems to be in disarray.

13.             Problem-Solving - As a ministry devoted to bringing the world to a relationship with Christ, SPBC will find itself reconciling mammoth discontinuities and conflicts that exist on a worldwide scale.

14.             Cross-Cultural Expansion - The 2020 Vision Plan encourages and promotes SPBC to take a major part in establishing new congregations in ethnic and cross-cultural communities.

Building Projects

The Long-Range Planning Committee would like to propose the following motion and timeline for relocation to the property located on Old Mountain Road.  Please remember, the times are estimates.  Whether they need to be revised or not is totally dependent upon how soon each step is completed.  This proposal comes in the form of a motion separate from the rest of the 2020 Vision Plan.
